It’s really weird to be so sad that a store is closing- a store that also has an online component that will still be open. But I’m REALLY sad that Re/Dress is closing. Re/Dress (the ladies who work there) allowed me to really examine how I thought about fashion, my body, and how the two can work together. This isn’t to say that I didn’t know how to dress my figure, or that I wasn’t taking fashiony chances before going there, but they let me take my interest in wearing ridiculous clothing to an extreme.
I remember going there one Sunday with my friend Jenna and she tried on a pair of shoes. Jenna said to one of the shopgrrls, “My foot is too wide”. The shopgrrl said (forgive me but I don’t remember who said it) said, “Your foot isn’t too wide- the shoe is too narrow!”
I know it’s silly, but that statement changed the way I think about clothes and the way I think about my life in them. Choosing clothing is such a weirdly important part of my life, and I want to thank the ladies of Re/Dress for making it a much more exciting and joyful experience.
Although there is a huge (get it?) community of like-minded people online, and plenty of other places to buy plus-sized clothing, I will really cherish my memories in that little haven of Re/Dress NYC.
