Dear Thirdbeatred:
I’m so sad the store is closing—we all are. Sadly, the body positive resources for plus size women are super dwindling in New York City. And while we will be missed we will also miss our customers and putting daily smiles on folks’ faces for getting to shop in a low-pressure, high-fun, and explicitly made to help you feel good about yourself store.
We know that you can go to Monif C.’s boutique in NYC and feel confident about being plus size.
I was just talking to our owner Deb about this and she reminded me that body positive shopping is also about the attitude you bring in to the store.
It’s like this: if you feel confident in your curves you shouldn’t let a surly shop owner or a “helpful” shop girl telling you she thinks you should wear spanx with jeans* get you down. You know what looks good on you, you know you love your body, that love shouldn’t be diminished by the mission of the store you’re in.
Of course, it really matters where you spend your money. It matters to patronize the small indie designers who are making clothes for plus size women while big corporations manufacture ill-fitting, terrible styles. It matters to put your money where your mouth is so body positive plus size resources don’t keep going out of business. The $30 you spend at Re/Dress online (whose inventory will keep expanding and Deb will add vintage soon) make a bigger difference to body positivity than spending $30 at Avenue.
If anyone can think of any explicitly body positive shopping resources local to NYC let us know!
My fellow Shop Grrrrl and independent wardrobe consultant Leslie Medlik and I recognize the gaping hole Re/Dress NYC is leaving behind and are starting a periodic shopping event. Stay tuned to our website for more information as we develop it.
